To ensure your artisan mate lasts a lifetime, it requires a simple but essential curing process before its first use; fill it with used damp yerba and a splash of warm water for 24 hours, then gently scrape the inner walls with a spoon and rinse. Always use water below 80°C (176°F) to protect the natural gourd or wood from thermal shock, and never use soap or dishwashers, as these porous materials will absorb chemical flavors. After each session, empty the yerba, rinse with warm water, and let it air dry tilted at an angle in a well-ventilated spot—avoiding direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent cracks and ensure the interior dries completely. For mates with leather or alpaca details, simply wipe the exterior with a dry, soft cloth to maintain their original shine and premium texture.
